The conflict between conservative politics and medical professionals has escalated beyond public health officials to target the doctors caring for children.
Texas AG Leads Investigation Into Pediatricians
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is at the center of a broad investigation into pediatric medical providers, insurance companies, vaccine manufacturers, and other entities. Paxton alleges pediatricians received documents stating they were in possession of material involving potential misleading or deceptive acts regarding incentives for childhood vaccines.
The investigation also implicates the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), accusing the group of a pay-to-play scheme to promote commercial ambitions of Big Pharma benefactors, according to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This accusation stems from the AAP advising against Kennedy’s preferred truncated vaccination schedule.
The AAP’s traditional approach stands in contrast to recommendations from Kennedy’s agency, which supports a different schedule. In May 2025, a report commissioned by Kennedy criticized doctors as captives of groupthink and drug industry influence, while also targeting the American Medical Association for condemning misinformation spread by some physicians.
Broader Conflict with Medical Establishment
Attacks on doctors represent the latest phase of a broader conflict initiated by conservatives against medical science and public health authorities. Donald Trump proposed significant cuts to medical research funding, including reductions for studies on cerebral palsy, emerging diseases, and spinal bifida. Public health agencies like the CDC faced substantial staff reductions under his administration.
Trump also sought to eliminate CDC work on injuries and chronic diseases entirely. His administration targeted Dr. Anthony Fauci, then-NIH director, by stripping him of Secret Service protection due to credible death threats. A mural featuring Fauci was ordered removed.
Kennedy authored a book vilifying Fauci, while Senator Rand Paul pushed for his indictment. Kennedy frequently links Fauci to Bill Gates, who has become a target for supporting public health measures.
Impact on Trust and Public Health Responses
Doctors, who most families interact with directly, are increasingly portrayed as adversaries rather than trusted advisors. This shift from attacking distant researchers and public health leaders to targeting frontline physicians marks a concerning evolution in the politicization of medicine. Kennedy has consistently opposed vaccination efforts, holding doctors in disdain for their support of established vaccination protocols.
